        Retrospective film event honors Pema Tseden

        To commemorate the first anniversary of the passing of Chinese film director Pema Tseden, a retrospective film screening event will be held over weekends from May 18 to June 2 at Broadway Cinematheque in Nanshan District.

        Attendees will have the opportunity to view a selection of his distinguished arthouse films showcasing Tibetan life: “Balloon” (2019), “The Silent Holy Stones” (short film, 2002), “Grassland” (2004), “The Weatherman’s Legacy” (2005), “The Search” (2007), “Jinpa” (2018), “Tharlo” (2015), “The Sacred Arrow” (2014), “Snow Leopard” (2023), “The Silent Holy Stones” (feature-length film, 2005), and “Old Dog” (2011).

        All of the three short and eight feature-length films will be shown with English and Chinese subtitles, except for “The Weatherman’s Legacy” and “Snow Leopard,” which only have Chinese subtitles.

        Audience members can claim complimentary merchandise, such as a brochure, a souvenir card and a book of Pema’s short stories, at the cinema by showing their tickets.

        Regarded as one of the most prominent figures in contemporary Chinese cinema, Pema has garnered critical acclaim for his films set in Tibetan regions. His works often explore themes of traditional life, culture and the integration of modernity, reflecting his thoughts on life, humanity and beliefs.

        Born in 1969 in Hainan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province, Pema studied Tibetan literature at Northwest Minzu University in Lanzhou, Gansu Province. Renowned for his direct and impactful writing style, he adopts a captivating humorous tone in his narratives. His novels and short stories have been translated into various languages such as English, French, German, Spanish, Japanese, and Korean.

        Driven by a fervor for filmmaking, Pema honed his skills in directing at the esteemed Beijing Film Academy and became a film professor of the China Academy of Art in 2021. At times, Pema incorporated elements of magical realism in his films, yet his portrayals of characters remain grounded in authenticity.

        His films have been featured in numerous international film festivals and have clinched accolades at esteemed events like the Golden Rooster and Hundred Flowers Film Festival, Shanghai International Film Festival, Hong Kong International Film Festival, Venice International Film Festival, and Busan International Film Festival, among others.
